Why This Site Exists

I spent years building an off-grid lifestyle. Solar power. Water systems. Food security. Physical security.

Cameras on the front door and alarms at every entry I could think of.

Then one morning in my late 50s, facing retirement, I looked at the 401(k) I'd been contributing to since I was 40.

A quiet, painful awareness hit me. I had defended every door but one. The one that mattered most.

I had left my retirement up to a portfolio manager. As long as there were small gains on the statement, I felt safe. I assumed small gains meant I was on track.

What I was not paying attention to was inflation. I wasn't paying attention to monetary policy. I wasn't paying attention to the difference between the number in my account and the purchasing power that number represented.
